Reflection
Throughout this project I learned about what happened to Johnstown during such a tragic flood. I learned that there are different approaches that a teacher can take when teaching about a social studies topic. With this social studies topic, a teacher could teach about where Pennsylvania is, what a flood is and how it effects a town, what type of tragic event happened to Johnstown, and also how people in a community support their town after tragic events. History is taught because often time history should not repeat itself. This lesson could teach students what caused the flood and what the town has done differently to build the town back to how it was and how the town came to be what it is today.
One essential standard that goes along with this topic is 3.G.1.3 Exemplify how people adapt to, change and protect the environment to meet their needs. This fits because after the flood occurred, people from the town and all around came to Johnstown to help build the town back up and worked together as a community.
I have learned that social studies can be a fun subject to teach and fun for the students to learn. History has many little details that some people do not even realized and as a teacher if I can help teach students to focus in on the main point of something and not focus on the big picture then they could take more away from the lesson.
