CONCLUSION
We learn and study history because we
do not want history to repeat itself. Clearly, this was a very tragic event
that impacted the town of Johnstown in a tremendous way. I think this historic
event is important because people need to be sure that engineering of dams are
built in a way that events like this do not happen. This disaster could have
been prevented if people had taken the poor engineering of this dam more serious.
After tragedy, there were two other floods that occurred in Johnstown. One
flood occurred in 1936 and the other flood occurred in 1977. All three of these
floods caused people to lose their lives. I personally think that Johnstown
needs to figure out ways to prevent flooding. Obviously, natural disasters
cannot be prevented, but I feel like the town is in a poor position considering
all of the floods that keep occurring. Also, the fact that each flood causes
people to lose their lives, I feel like people in the town need to take floods
more serious and figure out ways to prevent floods or be prepared for floods do
to their repeated occurrences (1936 & 1977 Floods). Which is what happened in 1943. The Johnstown Local Flood Protection Project (JLFPP) joined a nationwide system of 8,000 dams and 25,000 miles of inland and intra-coastal navigation channels. This included locks and dams, groundwater pumps and many miles of canals, pipes, and tunnels. This would enable floods like the 1889 flood from happening because water is being drained instead of rushing down the valley towards Johnstown http://explorepahistory.com/hmarker.php?markerId=1-A-348
